Contraindications to Massage

Massage is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. However, there are three types of contraindications: (1) total, when massage should not be performed at all; (2) local, when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas; (3) medical, when massage can only be performed once medical permission has been granted.

The following restrictions are in place to protect your health and well-being. Thank you for taking them seriously.

Total Contraindications
If you have any of these conditions, you should not be treated with massage at this time:
• Fever •
• Air-born contagious diseases (cold, flu, bronchitis, chickenpox, meningitis, measles, mumps, pneumonia, shingles,
  tuberculosis) •
• Under the influence of drugs or alcohol (including prescription pain medication) •
• Cardiovascular disorders (unstable angina, heart attack within the past 2 months, deep vein thrombosis) •
• Stroke within the past month, transient ischaemic attack •
• Cancer / chemotherapy •
• Undiagnosed oedema •
• Recent operations or acute injuries •
• Recent inoculations •
• Severe undiagnosed headaches or current migraine •
• Skin conditions (athlete's foot, impetigo, lice, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies) •
• First trimester of pregnancy •

Hot Stone Massage Total Contraindications
• High blood pressure • Raynaud's disease • Neuropathy • Nerve damage • MS •

Local Contraindications
Massage can be given but not over any areas affected by:
• Varicose veins • Phlebitis • Bruising • Cuts • Sunburn • Blisters • Fractures • Hernia • Skin disorders (acne, boils, cold sores, verrucas, warts) • Areas affected by inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, tendonitis and bursitis, are locally contraindicated only during acute phases. •

Medical Contraindications
If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved before your session in writing by your G.P:
• Angina • Arteriosclerosis • Cirrhosis of the liver • Coronary artery disease • Diabetes • Epilepsy • Haemophilia • Heart attack • Hepatitis • High blood pressure • Oedema • Osteoporosis • Parkinson's disease • Stroke • Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner •
